way ahead of him on that one though because if he intended
to come back he always walked down the aisle and made a mental note of who
was there just before he went home..
One Sunday night we were showing Sergeant York and we had a full house all
day. The outside of the theater was an alcove that was open in the front and
here we would put up pictures of the coming attractions. I had walked
outside to smoke and while I was there this good looking guy with two
beautiful women walked up and saw that we were showing Sergeant York. As
soon as I saw him, I knew who he was because he was playing at the hotel. It
was Jimmy Dorsey. He saw the ticket booth was closed and asked if he could
still see the movie. I told him that he would miss about a half-hour of the
beginning. He pulled out a five-dollar bill and asked if that would make any
difference. I told him to wait right there and I went up to the projection
booth and told Scotty what happened and I told him I would split the five
with him if he would stay over and run the picture through for them. He
readily agreed because five dollars was a lot of money back then. As you
have probably surmised, Till never saw that five spot either.
My dad taught Scotty how to run the projection machines and he also taught
Paul Beatty how to operate them.
