What a great webpage! Had to see to believe. We so often say, "WISH WE WOULD HAVE". That's my feeling about not having attended the Beatty family reunions. At this moment in time, I needed to connect to the people who were so dear to my sister Esther's heart. She passed away Monday, July 12, 2004, just ten days ago. But, I do believe she is with her Lord and her family, including dear Billie, and free of all pain. So regret not having ever met Billie in person, but through your wonderful loving comments, I feel as if I did know her and what a warm and very special lady she was. God willing, you will continue to furnish us with great past and present happenings of the Beatty family. I've been searching for my dad's father for some time now. My dad's name was Lloyd Wininger and he was born in Crystal, In. He never told us kids who our grandfather was due to some personal issues when he was a kid. He took his mother's maiden name-Wininger. Her name was Madeline, also born in Crystal. All I know is that he was from Orleans and that his last name was possibly Elrod. My dad was born in 1930, so if anybody has any information about any Elrods living in Orleans at this time please contact me. We really would like to know our relatives on our dad side now that he is gone. Thank you. angela wininger <run4fun@wal-mart connect.com> - Sunday, July 13, 2003 at 13:43:11 (CDT)

Good news on the DNA front. The laboratory has just advised me that Natt Batey of Dennison TX matches me exactly on 24 markers and is only 1 mutation off on the 25th. This means the probability that Natt and I have a common ancestor within 8 generations is 0.999 or almost certain. Turns out Natt is from a host of Bateys in TX with ancestors in AL. The newsletter was fascination, as usual. Can anybody tell me more about Amos Gass? People might like to know that I recently donated a quilt top made by my grandmother, Amelia Ellis Gass, to the quilt collection of the Falmouth (MA) Historical Society. It was made by grandmother and never quilted, but it is in good condition, a Star pattern in red, black, and cream-colored fabric, and it will be shown in an exhibition in the museums operated by the society. The exhibition will start July 18 and stay up for six weeks. Then the quilt will then be put in a museum-quality storage box and be stored with the other 60 antique quilts in their collection. I am happy to think it will be preserved in this way for many many years after I am gone. Jeanne Stump <robstump@rcn.com> - Friday, July 04, 2003 at 10:27:14 (CDT)

I have received several enquires in re the source of the Beatty/Beaty/Beattie/Beatie/etc name. ----------------------------- Aaron, thanks for contacting me. I just prepared the below information to answer another query, and it seems to fit your question. 1. I have seen/heard/read several variations of where our name came from. The most common is that it is a dimunitive of "Bartholomew." Others say it came from "Beth" and "MacBeth." Odd when you consider our ancestors fought a war to get rid of royalty, that so many Americans attempt to connect with ANY royal family. The best suggestion I have heard came from an Austrailian author who is quite well-versed on Celtic matters. He says that it could very likely be a corruption of the two Celtic words for "little house." Until about the 13th century people only had one name, and when villages got larger and folks couldn't sort out all of the Georges, they used trades, locations, hair color, and other means to distinguish one George from another. So in Scotland and the border country, where Celtic was spoken, you may have George from the valley, George with the whitehead, George the smitty, George the barrel maker, or George in the little house. These would become obvious last names and the last of these would be "George Beag-tigh." (Or "Bheag-taigh" as an alternate spelling.) With the elide used in our language it easy to see how this could have become "B-8-T" or "Bee-Tee." (Here I am using the phonetic form.) 2. From this we could conclude there a lot of Beatty families are not genetically related; they just happened to have lived in "little houses!" This is my second visit to your wonderful site. Last time was in May, this year (see below). My sister Virginia from Toledo was visiting this weekend and we found another Beatty site that had our Beatty lineage traced back to John Beaty from the Kingdom of Ireland who moved his family to Indiana County (PA) about 200 years ago. We come down through: William Allen Beaty> William B.Beatty> Miller Anthony Beatty> Ralph Emerson Beatty (1896-1978). Ralph E. Cornelious Van Cader (probably born in Rotterdam, Netherlands) was the adoptive father of my father in law, William Raymond Van Cader nee John William Flanagan to Elisha Flanagan and Ida Goldsmith. The name has sometimes been spelled Van Sader. We believe Cornelious came to America with his brother (name not known) and that the brother died in New York a bachelor. Enjoy reading your website! Will be adding to your database in the near future. My sister Virginia has been collecting data on the Beatty and McElroy families that I am hoping to put in my Genealogy Online program. Both my parents (Ralph and Grace) passed away about 20 years ago and are buried just south of Pittsburgh. My brother, Frank Beatty of Indianapolis, passed away last September while watching the horrible events on the 11th. My sister Virginia's husband, Frank Jirak of Toledo, passed away a year earlier. My three children live closeby here in Alexandria, VA. I have a son. Ralph,III, and daughters Barbara and Karen. Barbara is married to Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard and is on the Fox News Channel. I have been retired about 10 years after a long career as a civilian scientist working on Navy problems since 1942. I have been married to Doris Cornwell of Purcellville, VA. for 57 years. She has been collecting data on the Cornwell and Wilson families. Dr. Ralph Emerson Beatty, Jr. <RalphBDoc@aol.com> - Thursday, May 16, 2002 at 16:07:49 (CDT)

Mr. Beatty, My father, William Weikert is the son of Roy and Freda (Hanger) Weikert. I noticed that their decendants were not listed on your genealogy and thought I'd bring you up to speed. Roy was a teacher in Jasper but lived in Crystal, Indiana. Roy and Freda had three children, Dean, Norma Joette, and William Edward. Dean passed away some time ago, and was married to Janet; he had one deceased daughter, Pamela Jane, and one living son, Randall Dean. Randall is married to Lori. They live in Paoli, Indiana, and have three children from Lori's previous marriage: Christopher Weikert, Stephanie, and Logan. Norma Joette (teacher, b. 1 July 1943) is married to Ted Quinn (retired mine worker). They have one child, Anthony Dean (attorney, b. 16 Mar 1972). Anthony is married to Julie Rasche (teacher, m. 1 July 1995, b. 1971); they have two children, Kaden Anthony (7 Nov 1997) and Kortney (17 Apr 2000). They all live in Crystal, Indiana. William Edward (judge, b. 16 Dec 1945) married Carolyn Fleck (b. 31 Dec 1948, m. 3 Oct 1970). They live in Jasper, Indiana. They have two children: Emily Jane (myself, b. 6 Oct 1976) and Katherine Ann (b. 14 Apr 1979), who both live in Indianapolis. Thanks so much for your dilligent research, you've provided an incredible amount of new information for my family! Wonderful newsletter, Marvin! Delighted to read it. My Bledsoes, even though based on Dubois County, did a lot of their business and socializing in French Lick. And there is certainly a link between the Bledsoes and Beattys in Leon Taylor, who married Bertha Beatty, both of Orange County, I believe. Leon & Bertha are having a really hard time this year (2001), so give them a thought and a howdy in Farmersburg if you can. Marvin, I am looking for the father of Michael Caldwell who was born in Botetourt County, virginia, possibley Fincastle, in 1810. He moved to Appanoose county in before 1850. He had a son William HenryCaldwell b. 1858 with siblings Jeremiah and Caleb. These children came from his second wife Barbary Williamson. He had a previous wife Margaret Walker. I think he may have been the son of your Willaim you have in your data base. Do you have any information of William and Priscilla's children? I'd appreciate any clues. I am a new family history buff. William Beverly Thacker [ born 1796,Pittsylvania co. Va.,died 1866, hawkins co. tenn.] was my gggrandfather. After Mahala Thacker died, he married my gggrandmother Sarah Sisk from Alabama.I have a large picture of her. William Beverly Thacker's parents were John Beverly Thacker,Sr.[1772-1860], and Elizabeth Murphy [1775 - ?], They married Feb. 27, 1795. John Beverly Thacker lived with his daughter Rhoda Ann [1803],untill his death. He is in the 1860 census, Hawkins co. Tenn., age 88, Some people get him confused with his son John Beverly Thacker,Jr. [ born oct 10, 1800, died April 26, 1867]. John Jr. was never in Tenn. You have done a great job with this. Dear Marvin, I cannot express my thanks to you for the news letter. I found the Web page very interesting. I need much more time to look or copy it. I am not good on the computer, but I am trying. My files are in disarray but getting neater. I do have a little information on the children of William Asa Harmon and Edna Lorraine Hawhee. I great hopes for getting a lot done after May 12 when I retired from the Adjutant General's Office for the State. I worked at Stout Field here in Indianapolis. My daughter Debra Dawn (Houze) White died of a heart attack on May 20,2000. I have really been in shock, we had no way to know she was so sick. I married William Bernard Houze of Indianapolis in August 1953. Debra Was born in Bell County, Fort Hood, Texas on December 28, 1954. We came back to Indy. William Houze and I were divorced 1957/58. I later married Richard Lee Carter of Indianapolis. Our son is Richard Douglas (Jack) Carter born April 14,1967. Jack is a Purdue graduate and works in engineering for Navistar in Springfield, Ohio. He bought a place out in the horse and cattle country. He should have been a farmer but has turned out to be quite a builder. They have remodeled the small brick home they bought on 2acres outside Urbana. The house is triple original size for his wife, daughter and the twins. I visit when I can. Debbie and her disabled mate lived with me. Well as usual I don't know when to quit writing. I have visited my half sister Elizabeth Harmon Brosmer in Wildcat Cove, French Lick, In. and my girlhood friend, Martha (Prosser) Abel in Prospect. Martha has her Mothers home that sits next to the ground where Edna Lorraine and William Asa Harmon lived. Mom Harmon rented the place when she came to Indy. then she had to sell it. Some of my happiest memories are in Prospect. I went to 1st or 2nd grade in West Baden elementary that sat way up a hill. I have a scanner not hooked up yet. I don't know how to upload my Family Tree Maker files. I hope to figure it out soon. I want our family remembered. I think they are wonderful, of course. I'll get some facts in order and send to you. Thanks again for being there. Phyllis Ray Carter Phyllis Ray (Wood) Carter <phyllisrwood@aol.com> - Thursday, October 05, 2000 at 17:54:33 (CDT)
