The Cream Bandit

When we were growing up in the Valley, my first cousin, Gene Abel, had the nickname "Milky" hung on him. This is the way it happened; Grandma Beatty, who lived next door to the Abel family, had a quart of milk delivered to her each day, early in the morning. This was before pasteurization was discovered and the milk was delivered in a glass bottle. All the cream would rise to the top of the bottle so it was necessary to shake the bottle good before using it. Grandma noticed that she was not getting a full bottle of milk nor was there any cream in the bottle.

This went on for several days. Finally, she started getting up before the milkman came and from a concealed position, she was determined to solve the mystery of her missing cream. It didn't take long. One morning she saw Gene remove the cap from the bottle, turn it up and drink the cream, then replace the cap. From then on Gene was known as "Milky".

Joe Beatty

1867 – 1911

Joe Beatty was born near Ellsworth, Indiana, to David and Mary (Mickleson) Beatty. David was first married to Maria Conrad and they had one son, Phillip Beatty, who moved to Southeast Township in Orange County and was somewhat famous for his sorghum molasses.

Joe’s mother died when he was about one year of age and his father promptly remarried a widow by the name of Bundy, I do not know her maiden name. David had accumulated quite a bit of land but Lawton Beatty told ne that his third wife and her son’s ran through it all. David and Mary are buried at Cane Creek but there is no stone for David.

In 1889 Joe married Elda Nolan who was a daughter of Tom and Elizabeth (Ellis) Nolan. Tom

Nolan was the school teacher at Ellsworth. He was also a notary public and was the census taker for some of the census years. Joe had two sisters; Macie who married Dr. William Walker of Cuzco. His other sister, Mary married Abraham Stevens.
