It took fifty-four years for the government to erect a monument in honor of “The Greatest Generation.” The old vet pictured above was able to attend the unveiling in spite of his 79 years. This memorial was not even authorized by congress until 1993! Shameful is my reaction. 16 million troops served in the war, 405000 were killed and another 671000 were wounded in the greatest war in the history of mankind.. The newscaster Tom Brokaw was the first to coin the phrase “The Greatest Generation” and he truly believes that we were. When I went overseas I was a newly married man and I had no idea when or if I would ever be coming home. There are only 4 million of us left and we are dying off at the rate of 1100 per day. It gives me a great sense of pride knowing that I am a member of “The Greatest Generation.”
